Completing phase one was relatively easy. All I had to do was transcribe all the obvious Ragusin information from the 1902 church census. If the Ragusin name appeared then I transcribed it; if the Ragusin name did not appear then I did not transcribe it. This included all Ragusin males and the widows of Ragusin males. Actually the hardest part for me was typing up the data and creating the post.
In phase 2, I went back through the census and compared it to pre-1857 birth and marriage records for Veli Losinj–of which Ilovik is a “suburb.” This allowed me to find the maiden names of the Ragusin males’ widows–none of whom were Ragusin females. I also found several Ragusin females who had married non-Ragusin males and were left off the phase 1 list. In all cases I also was able to find not only the father’s name, but also the mother’s name (not provided in the church census). For both the father and the mother I was also able to add their fathers’ names.
There is a big caveat. My birth and marriage records are all pre-1857 and unfortunately most of the people in he census were born after 1857. There were 19 household listed in phase 1. In phase 2 I was able to provide additional information on only ten of those households and I added four additional Ragusin female households.
For the originally listed Ragusin males their fathers were listed. I was able to add their father’s father, mother, and his mother’s father. For the newly added Ragusin females I found the same information–father, mother and both grandfathers. For all the originally listed Ragusin widows I compiled all the same information, but none of them were Ragusins. There were also several instances that the mother of the person in the census was a Ragusin.
The symbols [1] mean that I could obtain no additional information about the head of household or their spouse because they were born after 1857.
The phrase “of Marco Ragusin (of Giovanni) and Maria Barichievic (of Agostino)” means the person in question is the child of Marco Ragusin, whose fathers name is Giovanni, and Marco’s wife Maria Barichievic, whose father’s name is Agostino.
The names Lettic and Leccic seemed to have been used interchangeably.
